Crossing the Causeway requires more than just petrol. The Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) RFID tag is mandatory for foreign-registered cars entering Malaysia. This guide covers registration, installation, and common pitfalls.

⚠️ Enforcement Status (as of Apr 27, 2026)

Malaysia's VEP has been fully enforced since 1 July 2025. Drivers without a valid, activated RFID tag face a compound fine of RM 300 (~S$91) and will not be allowed to exit Malaysia until the fine is paid and the VEP is registered or activated. Repeat offenders face fines up to RM 2,000 or imprisonment.

This guide focuses on Singapore-registered cars. If you travel by motorcycle, check the latest JPJ portal guidance before relying on older summaries.

1. Online Registration at VEP Portal

Create your account at vep.jpj.gov.my, fill in owner and vehicle details, and upload required documents (log card, insurance, and identity). You will need your NRIC/passport and Certificate of Entitlement (COE).

2. Book & Install RFID Tag

After approval, schedule installation at a listed center (e.g., TCSENS Danga Bay). Installation takes ~10 mins and costs RM 10. The tag must be placed on the left headlamp or windscreen, and a photo must be submitted for activation. The RFID tag is valid for 5 years.

Link your RFID to your TNG eWallet. The RM 20 Road Charge deducts automatically at immigration. We recommend maintaining a balance of at least RM 50 to cover the road charge, tolls, and parking in JB.

4. Verify VEP Status

Ensure your status shows Active before entering Malaysia. Print or save your confirmation. If your status is still pending, bring the proof, but do not assume it will be accepted for regular holiday travel.

🔔 Coming 1 Jan 2027: Singapore VEP Fee Changes

Singapore has announced major changes to its VEP for foreign-registered vehicles, effective 1 January 2027:

  • Cars: Daily VEP fee increases from S$35 → S$50.
  • Motorcycles: S$4 → S$7.
  • No more free days: The annual 10 free VEP days and weekday free hours will be removed.
  • ERP 2.0: From 1 April 2026, foreign vehicles may opt to install the new On-Board Unit (OBU). Without it, a flat-rate ERP charge applies on ERP operational days from 1 January 2027: S$10 for cars and S$3 for motorcycles.

5. Troubleshooting & FAQs

Having issues at the gantry? Check adhesive placement, account balance, and ensure the vehicle plate on your VEP matches the car you're driving. If the gantry doesn't detect your tag, pull over and notify an officer — do not tailgate the car in front.
