Deepavali 2026 Singapore–JB Travel Guide: Dates and Crossing Plan

Deepavali 2026HolidaySingapore to JBReturn Planning

Deepavali falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026, with Monday, 9 November a public holiday in Singapore and a replacement holiday in Johor. For a Singapore–JB trip, plan the outward crossing and the return separately: a long weekend does not make either checkpoint reliably faster.

Planning review: 16 October 2026. The dates below come from official calendars. The suggested travel windows are planning considerations, not measured Deepavali queue forecasts. Check ICA’s newsroom for a holiday-specific advisory closer to departure, then check live Causeway and Second Link conditions.

Deepavali Dates: Singapore and Johor

Sun, 8 NovSingapore and Johor: DeepavaliConfirm opening hours and family commitments before choosing your crossing time.
Mon, 9 NovSingapore public holiday; Johor replacement public holidayAllow for a Monday return if work or school resumes on Tuesday.
Tue, 10 NovAdditional KPM school holiday in Johor, which is in Group BThis is a school-only date, not an extra Singapore public holiday or a general Johor public holiday.

Sources: Singapore MOM’s 2026 public holidays; Johor’s 2026 holidays and Sunday replacement rule; KPM 2026 calendar, Group B and festival-holiday appendix. Johor marks its Deepavali date as subject to amendment. Confirm your own school or work calendar.

Deepavali is separate from the later year-end school break. Singapore’s MOE kindergarten, primary and secondary school vacation starts on 21 November; Johor’s KPM Group B year-end vacation starts on 5 December. See the 2026 holiday and school-break calendar for the full context.

Plan the Singapore to JB Leg

Friday, 6 November after work and Saturday, 7 November are useful departure windows to assess because they precede the shared long weekend. That calendar overlap is a reason to allow flexibility; it is not evidence of a particular queue length.

  • Leaving after work: check both checkpoints before committing to the BKE or AYE. If queues are already growing, compare a later departure with your hotel’s check-in arrangements.
  • Taking a day trip: keep the first booking flexible and decide your return window before crossing. An early start can still encounter congestion.
  • Travelling for a family visit or celebration: build a buffer around the arrival time that matters to you. Avoid promising a fixed border-clearance time to your hosts.

Use Singapore to JB live traffic for the outward leg and the current crossing-time guidance when deciding whether to leave or wait.

Plan the Return to Singapore

Do not automatically apply a normal Sunday-return rule to this weekend. Monday is also a public holiday, while some Johor school families have Tuesday off. Return trips can therefore be spread across different days depending on work and school commitments.

  • Back at work or school on Tuesday: leave room for a Monday crossing delay. Check conditions before hotel checkout or your final meal, while you can still change the plan.
  • Returning on Sunday: compare live conditions in both directions rather than assuming everyone will wait until Monday.
  • Staying until Tuesday: verify that the extra day applies to your family. Johor’s KPM school holiday does not mean Singapore schools or workplaces are closed.
  • If both checkpoints are congested: assess a later departure from a safe stopping place. Do not trade a queue for a tired late-night drive.

Woodlands or Tuas for Your Destination

Your planStarting route comparison
JB Sentral, City Square, central JBCheck Woodlands first for destination fit, then compare Tuas if live congestion makes the detour worthwhile.
Bukit Indah, Iskandar Puteri, LEGOLANDCompare Tuas early because it serves western Johor; account for your starting point in Singapore too.
A longer drive beyond JBCompare the entire journey, including checkpoint access and the onward highway route, rather than the border queue alone.

These are geographic starting points, not a claim that one checkpoint will win throughout Deepavali. Check Woodlands and Tuas immediately before leaving.

Bus Options and Departure Checklist

For a central-JB outing, compare driving with the cross-border bus option. Check the operator’s timetable, boarding point and last return service. Buses still involve immigration clearance and possible queues; do not assume a guaranteed faster total journey.

ICA’s 31 August 2026 travel advisory recommends checking traffic before setting out and preparing MyICA QR clearance while carrying passports. Its September traffic figures do not predict November waiting times.

  • Check passport validity and the entry requirements that apply to every traveller.
  • Before driving, review the SG–JB vehicle checklist, including fuel, vehicle documents and payment readiness.
  • For a Malaysia-registered vehicle entering Singapore, review the foreign-vehicle guide; Singapore’s VEP and fines requirements differ from Malaysia’s VEP for Singapore cars.
  • Carry water and essentials, keep bookings flexible, and follow checkpoint signs and officers’ instructions.

Deepavali Travel Questions

Is Monday, 9 November 2026 a public holiday?

Yes. Singapore’s MOM calendar lists Monday, 9 November as a public holiday following Deepavali on Sunday. Johor’s published Sunday replacement rule also gives a replacement holiday on Monday.

Is Tuesday, 10 November a holiday on both sides?

No. KPM gives an additional Deepavali school holiday to Group B states including Johor on Tuesday. It is not an additional Singapore public holiday; check your school and employer’s arrangements.

What is the best time to cross during Deepavali?

There is no verified hour that guarantees a short queue. Start with your destination and required arrival time, compare the two live checkpoints, and keep an alternative departure window where practical.
